Anyway he’s battering up a new website all about internet marketing/SEO/links etc over at his new SEO Blog (check him out).

Today I did just such a thing and within minutes I get DM’d asking what I was doing mentioning such a story. TBH I can’t remember RT it but ignorance is no excuse!

I get sent a link to an article on the SEOConsultants.com website – a website which has more stuff on it that I can keep up with TBH and the the value of their RSS comes into it’s own – and the horror hits home. I’ve just in some way endorsed the sort of b*****ds I continually rail against.

Cheers to PageOneResults for making me feel like a complete wazzock on a Sunday morning and teaching me a useful lesson – I must think before I RT! And TBH more than that. Hitting RT does not always assure that everyone knows why you’re RT’ing, and remember kids check out those you’re mentioning as the web’s a dangerous place, full of dangerous companies, doing nasty things and in the same way you wouldn’t link to a toxic domain containing crap hitting RT provides a social link to equally toxic stuff (it’s your rep on the line not just a domain).

Self flagellation over for today…. I hope. Off to do 100 hand written lines of “I must not hit RT without thinking”, “I must not hit RT without thinking”,”I must not hit RT without thinking”…

Whilst wandering through my Twitter a/c for the day – having read about Google doing credit card comparison and Google staff being sentenced for taking off a video of some kid beating up an autistic kid (way to go the Italian court system) I saw Dr Aleks Krotoski mentioning that she had been labelled a he over at the Daily Record.

Did a quick search for the journalists name over in google with email, got an email address, sent email and quarter of an hour later it was changed

So duly I’m claiming all credit for them fixing it to a more correct sexual descriptor – using she!

I changed the Internet for the better – I believe – now back to some black belt ninja SEO (ok sumo SEO may be more appropriate but I’m sure I’ll start the diet soon).

Ok back to writing some SEO proposals I march with a full stomach and dreaming of Caol Ila.

I’m not daft. I know that an asterisk means that there will be a caveat. No sign of that on the Virgin site, the price is listed as 20Mb broadband with sky sport and movies and comes in at £77. I’ve phoned and been told I can only get free installtion if I apply online. And then I try to buy online – and you cant as the login bits down! So I send an email and get a price (no mention of free installation).

So I call during lunch and its £98. The offer on the website is wrong I get told –  free installation doesn’t mean free installation and I’m not entitled to this offer (I was yesterday but I’m not today). Think I may go to SKY. Just out of pure and utter damned frustration.

1. Cricket fans are stats mad – have you ever read Wisden? The whole book is devoted to the numbers about how batsmen and bowlers have performed over a year. And every website optimiser is the same. Studying analytics looking for the patterns and amortising everything down to averages to work out how things are working.
2. Bowling is like onsite targeting – honestly it is. As a bowler you look for a line (niche) and length (work) that will get the batsmen out. You work out where you should be pitching the ball and keep adjusting your run up, release point and had position until the ball does what you want it to. Onsite you’ll be doing the same – testing pages and adjusting content, calls to action, tone of voice, structure, images etc until you get the page that gives you the perfect result.
3. The tail certainly can wag – in cricket (espescially if your supporting Scotland) you need faith that the poorest batsmen will deliver the goods when batting. And the tail is going to be where you should always be looking for the quick wins – you’ll gert a low run rate but each of these run is of higher value as you’re closer to the end of the keyword pool. So make sure your tail is wagging.

This post may be a bit tenuous but I fancied doing something a but different to see what would come out of three bullet points I wrote out at the weekend.

Initially I moved from doing search engine optimisation and doing more search engine marketing and from here into everything from onsite conversion analysis, reporting, analytics and god knows what but I think its time to really start testing how far I can push my skills.

Duly over the next couple of months I’ll be blogging on a new website I’ll be launching in the travel industry with examples of what I’m doing with it and the benefits that testing etc bring to the income potential of the website. Initially the website will be run on an affiliate marketing program (Gavs been suggesting the Late Rooms program but may go with Hotels.com – anyone know of any real difference between them) and then moving it over to look at other exciting ways of generating cash from online marketing – a long term how to guide if you will but with my cash on the line. Could end in flames – but hopefully get it into a position where the website pays the couple of grand I need to pay for my honeymoon in the Maldives.

The first posts will be starting at the beginning of September – as I need to finish designing the website (in Drupal) and getting all the typos out of the content but should be ready. Even my fiancee is agreeing that it should be a useful enterprise

So I’ve came back from being sick and MSN has rebranded, almost every client is experiencing growth in sales volume and value from keywords which two months ago were generating little and I’ve rediscovered my love of cup noodle snacks from the Orient (not pot noodles which are stinking) – Nissin noodles are the way to go.

So hurrah and all I have to do now is answer the myriad of emails I’ve been receiving about Bing.com (what a stupid name for a search engine) promise to answer all my emails by the end of tomorrow – or maybe the day after. As I’m currently moving all my affiliate programs over to DGM.

And to round it off the Terminator – sorry Kate – didn’t win the apprentice so hurrah to the other one who did.
