A couple of times I’ve thought about developing a forum – generally its about whisky – but I never manage to get to the final stage of launching it. Generally due to the spamming which I’m sure would take place.
Andy has bravely decided to launch one – silly boy – about his pet interests in everything (environ)mental. His Green Forum has already started to get battered by me – generally complaining about anything and everything. So good luck to him. I’ve probably already started the warning flares going off in his head. It’s in PHPBB so no doubt he’ll have to keep it uptodate to stop it becoming a mess of porn and Rx (I’m a pessimist after my experiences of a news engine about whisky).

If you find any good phpBB extensions for controlling spam let me know – I’ve got one board that I run for the local chess league and I have to keep it set to no postings until you’ve had one approved because otherwise it’s wide open to spammers. Every few days I have to go in and purge all the new registrations from the bots and find the occasional real person.
Like too much open source software it’s not well thought through and relies on extensions for what should be basic functions.
