Legality of Using Stock Photography on a Website

I’ve been messing about with a couple of sites for my own amusement recently. Build up something just to see if I can. I know there are far more pressing things I should be doing but I’ve been in the mood for taking it a bit easier for a couple of weeks.

The main thing that I’ve been thinking about recently is whether I can use stock photography/stock images on these websites. I’ve just spent too much money over @ http://www.istockphoto.com (the images were lovely I promise you). But I’m a bit concerned what kind of license I have for these. Can I use these on my sites as images within banners etc? They have some T&C’s @ http://www.istockphoto.com/license.php. But thats all Greek to me.

Any help of this would be appreciated.

Just use anything on flickr with an creative commons attribution license. Best image resource there is. Browse by type here: http://www.flickr.com/creativecommons/

I work for Foto Search, which is also a stock photography website, and I believe I can help you out! The pictures that you purchased were either “Rights Managed” or “Royalty Free”. The “Royalty Free” images can be used anywhere you would like, and the “Rights Managed” images can only be used where you specify, at purchase, where you will use them.

If you need to, you can even go back to istockphoto.com and check to see what kind of licensing each image has, if you know where the images are located on the iStock website.

iStock doesn’t offer Rights Managed images, so that’s not an issue. They do offer and extended license if you’re going to produce something that’s resold (a shirt or a mug or something). But you should be fine with the basic license.

Be careful using anything off Flickr, creative commons or not. If you used an image from there containing a person and there is no model release, you could be sued.
